How to Create a Sense of Arrival

The Orchard is a generous family home in Oxfordshire, well-proportioned, well-positioned and full of potential. Yet for all its qualities, arriving at the house felt like something of an afterthought. A long drive ran straight to the front door without ceremony or structure, the lawn offered little to draw the eye, and the entrance lacked the sense of grandeur that a house of this character deserved. The garage sat prominently to the front, competing with the main house rather than supporting it.
The clients wanted to feel proud approaching their home and they wanted their guests to feel it too. The brief was to rethink the arrival experience entirely: to create a sense of occasion, establish a clear and beautiful approach, and make architectural and landscape changes that would bring genuine character to the front of the house.

Symmetry, Structure and Considered Detail

Simon Mack Architecture began, as always, by understanding how the space should feel before determining how it should look. The solution centred on reimagining the drive and entrance as a composed, symmetrical sequence, a journey to the front door rather than simply a route.
The drive was recentred to align with the main entrance, immediately establishing an axis of arrival. Either side, a wide pathway was planted symmetrically with carefully selected ornamental trees, small in scale but rich in character, their seasonal foliage marking the passage of the year in colour and texture. The planting is not merely decorative; it frames the house, draws the eye forward and gives the approach genuine rhythm and life.
The garage was relocated to the side of the property and reclad in painted timber, allowing it to sit quietly in the composition without competing with the main elevation. At the entrance itself, open porches were introduced on each side of the front door, a simple architectural gesture that adds depth, shelter and a sense of welcome to what was previously a flat and unremarkable facade.

A Home Worth Coming Home To

The transformation at The Orchard demonstrates how thoughtfully considered architecture and landscape design, even without dramatic structural intervention, can fundamentally change the way a home feels.
The symmetry of the approach gives the house the grandeur it always merited. The planting brings year-round interest and variety: blossom in spring, dense green canopy through summer, rich autumn colour and elegant winter structure. Arriving at The Orchard is now an experience in itself, one that changes gently with every season.
The clients describe a genuine sense of wellbeing each time they come home. Their guests arrive impressed. And the house, at last, announces itself with the confidence and quiet dignity it deserves.
